Hong Kong Stocks Rise for a Second Day as Investors Shrug off Trump’s Latest Tariffs

Hong Kong stocks rose on Thursday, as investors shrugged off tariffs on car imports by US President Donald Trump and heavy overnight losses on Wall Street.

The Hang Seng Index rose 0.4%, while the Hang Seng Tech Index gained 0.3%.

In terms of star stocks, Pop Mart shares jumped another 9% after surging 10.9% on Wednesday. The toy company said it will continue to expand its global footprint with focus on North America and Europe, after reporting profit that more than doubled last year thanks to the popularity of its Labubu dolls adored by celebrities.

Haidilao gained another 6% after jumping 6% on Wednesday. The Chinese restaurant operator’s 2024 results surpassed market expectations.

Chinese bubble tea and drinks firm, Mixue Group, which has surpassed McDonald’s and Starbucks in store count to become the world’s largest food and beverage chain, reported a spike in profits on Wednesday (Mar 26) as it laid out further expansion plans. The shares jumped 5% on Thursday.

Chip stocks jumped with SMIC up 4%, Hua Hong Semi up 2%, Shanghai Fudan up 0.9%.

China’s SenseTime reported a wider-than-estimated net loss for the full year as the AI tools developer continues to grapple with rising competition in a crowded market. The shares sank 6% in morning trading.

Xiaomi shares fell more than 4%. The company said on Tuesday it had raised $5.5 billion in an upsized share sale as the company pushes forward with its ambitious electric vehicle manufacturing plans.

Everg Vehicle plunged 29% in morning trading on Thursday after surging nearly 75% yesterday. GAC Group denied rumors of acquiring the Nansha factory, while Everg Vehicle stated it was unaware of any reason behind the stock's rise.

One company made its debut. Soft International, which makes personal hygiene disposable products, jumped 31%.

In terms of other star stocks, BYD, Bilibili, Baidu and Meituan rose 2%; Kuaishou rose 1%. While XPeng fell 2%; NIO fell 5%.
