Kiah Duggins, a Washington civil-rights attorney, had returned to Wichita, Kan., where she attended high school before boarding the ill-fated American Airlines plane that crashed. Howard University School of Law, where Duggins was set to start work as a professor this fall, confirmed her death in a social-media post Thursday.
"As a civil rights lawyer, she dedicated her career to fighting against unconstitutional policing and unjust money bail practices in Tennessee, Texas and Washington, D.C. ," Howard said in the post. "We ask for privacy and respect for Professor Duggins' family, students, and colleagues during this difficult time. Plans to honor her legacy will be shared in coming days." Duggins had deep ties to Wichita, having graduated from high school there in 2013 and later from Wichita State University, when she spent a semester in 2016 as a policy intern for former first lady Michelle Obama. She went into civil-rights law after graduating from Harvard Law School.
