The Trump administration is planning to toughen US semiconductor restrictions on China and is urging Japan and the Netherlands to consider similar measures, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the matter.

US officials recently held meetings with Japanese and Dutch counterparts to discuss measures that would restrict engineers from Tokyo Electron and ASML (ASML) from maintaining semiconductor equipment in China, according to the report.

The Trump administration is also considering tightening existing curbs on the quantity of artificial intelligence chips that can be exported internationally without a license, some of the sources told Bloomberg.

A White House representative didn't immediately respond to Bloomberg's request for comment, while the Dutch foreign trade ministry and Japanese ministry of economy, trade and industry declined to comment, according to the report.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires, while ASML declined to comment.
