Shares of ABC plummeted 5.10% on Tuesday, as the company's long-standing plan to relocate its Sydney operations from Ultimo to Parramatta continues to face internal resistance and concerns from staff and unions.
The relocation, initially outlined in 2021, aims to have 75% of ABC's content makers working outside Ultimo by 2025, a move billed as better connecting with the city's diverse communities in the western suburbs. However, the transition has been met with varying levels of frustration and anger from ABC employees.
Union representatives have raised concerns about the Parramatta site's safety, parking, inadequate facilities, and the potential negative impact on programming quality and guest diversity. Delays and staff divisions have also plagued ABC's push to move its content creators out of Sydney's inner city.
