Quantum Computing Inc. (QUBT) shares skyrocketed 7.01% in pre-market trading on Thursday, following Microsoft's proclamation that 2025 is the year for businesses to become "quantum-ready." The tech giant's bullish stance on quantum computing fueled a broader rally in the sector, mitigating a recent slump triggered by skepticism from industry leaders.
In a blog post on Tuesday, Microsoft unveiled its new "Quantum Ready" program designed to help business leaders understand and harness the potential of quantum computing. The initiative will involve one-on-one workshops, industry forums, and tools to build hybrid quantum-classical applications, invest in quantum skills training, focus on quantum security, and prepare for large-scale quantum adoption.
Microsoft's positive outlook comes after bearish comments from executives like Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who had claimed "very useful quantum computers" could still be 15 to 30 years away. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had also echoed skepticism, sending quantum stocks tumbling last week. However, Microsoft's show of support reignited optimism in the sector, with Quantum Computing Inc. joining the rally alongside other quantum players like IonQ, Rigetti Computing, and D-Wave Quantum.
Beyond Microsoft's program, the sector has seen a flurry of recent developments, including Nvidia announcing its first Quantum Day at the upcoming GTC 2025 event and D-Wave partnering with Carahsoft to boost quantum adoption in the U.S. government. As the first mover in entropy quantum computing with its Dirac-3 system, Quantum Computing Inc. also announced a collaboration with Sanders Tri-Institutional Therapeutics Discovery Institute to support computational biomedicine research using its quantum machines.
The marriage of quantum computing and artificial intelligence is expected to revolutionize industries ranging from drug discovery and financial risk analysis to materials science and optimization problems. Quantum computers can explore multiple solutions simultaneously, potentially solving complex challenges exponentially faster than classical computers. This convergence of quantum and AI could lead to breakthroughs in areas like molecular simulations for new drug development, designing advanced materials, optimizing investment portfolios, and uncovering hidden patterns in vast financial data.
