eREX (TYO:9517), a renewable energy company, conducted a co-firing test using Palm Kernel Shells (PKS) at the Itoigawa Power Plant, in collaboration with Taiheiyo Cement Corporation, according to a Wednesday filing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
The test, which ran from Sept. 6 to Sept. 13, demonstrated stable power generation with up to 30% PKS mixed with coal.
This initiative is part of Erex's broader strategy to transition coal-fired power plants in Japan toward a de-carbonized future. The company plans to continue its biomass power generation efforts, seeking support from local communities as it advances its fuel conversion strategy.
The Itoigawa Power Plant, located in Niigata Prefecture, has a rated output of 149,000 kW.
