Do Dynatrace's (NYSE:DT) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?

It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Dynatrace (NYSE:DT). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

Dynatrace's Earnings Per Share Are Growing

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Shareholders will be happy to know that Dynatrace's EPS has grown 24% each year, compound, over three years. As a result, we can understand why the stock trades on a high multiple of trailing twelve month earnings.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. While we note Dynatrace achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 22% to US$1.5b. That's a real positive.

Are Dynatrace Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$16b company like Dynatrace. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. With a whopping US$83m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. This should keep them focused on creating long term value for shareholders.

Is Dynatrace Worth Keeping An Eye On?

If you believe that share price follows earnings per share you should definitely be delving further into Dynatrace's strong EPS growth. Further, the high level of insider ownership is impressive and suggests that the management appreciates the EPS growth and has faith in Dynatrace's continuing strength. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research, so it would seem that it's a good stock to follow. Of course, profit growth is one thing but it's even better if Dynatrace is receiving high returns on equity, since that should imply it can keep growing without much need for capital.
