It is a pleasure to report that the Finance of America Companies Inc. (NYSE:FOA) is up 81% in the last quarter. But spare a thought for the long term holders, who have held the stock as it bled value over the last five years. Like a ship taking on water, the share price has sunk 86% in that time. It's true that the recent bounce could signal the company is turning over a new leaf, but we are not so sure. The real question is whether the business can leave its past behind and improve itself over the years ahead. We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It's a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it's worth keeping in mind there's more to life than money, anyway.

On a more encouraging note the company has added US$27m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the five-year loss for shareholders.

Finance of America Companies provided a TSR of 5.9% over the last twelve months. But that return falls short of the market. But at least that's still a gain!
