More than two dozen new illnesses have been reported in an E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald's Quarter Pounders.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday listed 26 new cases on its website, bringing the total number of cases to 75, with 12 new hospitalizations, bringing that total to 22.

The number of states involved has also risen, to 13 from 10. One death has been reported in the outbreak.

The CDC on Friday said everyone the agency has interviewed has reported eating at McDonald's before their illness started. The CDC earlier this week said early indications were that slivered onions served on the Quarter Pounder are a likely source of the outbreak.

The CDC said it believes the risk to the public from the outbreak is very low due to actions taken by McDonald's and produce giant Taylor Farms, which supplied the onions to the affected McDonald's locations and has initiated a voluntary recall of some onions sent to food-service operators.
