Looking at Flowers Foods, Inc.'s (NYSE:FLO ) insider transactions over the last year, we can see that insiders were net sellers. That is, there were more number of shares sold by insiders than there were purchased.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Flowers Foods

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Chief Growth Officer, Terry Thomas, for US$845k worth of shares, at about US$23.11 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$22.08. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive). The only individual insider seller over the last year was Terry Thomas.

In the last twelve months insiders purchased 16.58k shares for US$374k. On the other hand they divested 36.58k shares, for US$845k. Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It's great to see that Flowers Foods insiders own 7.5% of the company, worth about US$346m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

So What Do The Flowers Foods Insider Transactions Indicate?

The fact that there have been no Flowers Foods insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of Flowers Foods insider transactions don't fill us with confidence. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. While conducting our analysis, we found that Flowers Foods has 4 warning signs and it would be unwise to ignore them.
