Shareholders will be ecstatic, with their stake up 33% over the past week following Potbelly Corporation's (NASDAQ:PBPB) latest quarterly results. Revenues were US$115m, approximately in line with whatthe analysts expected, although statutory earnings per share (EPS) crushed expectations, coming in at US$0.12, an impressive 200% ahead of estimates. This is an important time for investors, as they can track a company's performance in its report, look at what experts are forecasting for next year, and see if there has been any change to expectations for the business. We thought readers would find it interesting to see the analysts latest (statutory) post-earnings forecasts for next year.

Following last week's earnings report, Potbelly's four analysts are forecasting 2025 revenues to be US$476.6m, approximately in line with the last 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are forecast to plummet 75% to US$0.33 in the same period. Yet prior to the latest earnings, the analysts had been anticipated revenues of US$475.3m and earnings per share (EPS) of US$0.33 in 2025. The consensus analysts don't seem to have seen anything in these results that would have changed their view on the business, given there's been no major change to their estimates.
With no major changes to earnings forecasts, the consensus price target fell 9.8% to US$15.33, suggesting that the analysts might have previously been hoping for an earnings upgrade. There's another way to think about price targets though, and that's to look at the range of price targets put forward by analysts, because a wide range of estimates could suggest a diverse view on possible outcomes for the business. The most optimistic Potbelly analyst has a price target of US$16.00 per share, while the most pessimistic values it at US$14.00. With such a narrow range of valuations, the analysts apparently share similar views on what they think the business is worth.
Of course, another way to look at these forecasts is to place them into context against the industry itself. We would highlight that Potbelly's revenue growth is expected to slow, with the forecast 0.8% annualised growth rate until the end of 2025 being well below the historical 7.9% p.a. growth over the last five years. By way of comparison, the other companies in this industry with analyst coverage are forecast to grow their revenue at 9.7% per year. So it's pretty clear that, while revenue growth is expected to slow down, the wider industry is also expected to grow faster than Potbelly.
The most obvious conclusion is that there's been no major change in the business' prospects in recent times, with the analysts holding their earnings forecasts steady, in line with previous estimates. On the plus side, there were no major changes to revenue estimates; although forecasts imply they will perform worse than the wider industry. Furthermore, the analysts also cut their price targets, suggesting that the latest news has led to greater pessimism about the intrinsic value of the business.
Keeping that in mind, we still think that the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for investors to consider. We have estimates - from multiple Potbelly analysts - going out to 2025, and you can see them free on our platform here.
