Shareholders in First Foundation (NYSE:FFWM) are in the red if they invested three years ago

First Foundation Inc. (NYSE:FFWM) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 17% in the last quarter. But that is meagre solace in the face of the shocking decline over three years. To wit, the share price sky-dived 73% in that time. Arguably, the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. But the more important question is whether the underlying business can justify a higher price still.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

Check out our latest analysis for First Foundation

Given that First Foundation didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

Over the last three years, First Foundation's revenue dropped 18% per year. That means its revenue trend is very weak compared to other loss making companies. And as you might expect the share price has been weak too, dropping at a rate of 20% per year. Never forget that loss making companies with falling revenue can and do cause losses for everyday investors. There is a good reason that investors often describe buying a sharply falling stock price as 'trying to catch a falling knife'. Think about it.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. A Different Perspective

First Foundation provided a TSR of 30% over the year. That's fairly close to the broader market return. To take a positive view, the gain is pleasing, and it sure beats annualized TSR loss of 8%, which was endured over half a decade. While 'turnarounds seldom turn' there are green shoots for First Foundation. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with First Foundation , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
