Investing in Shake Shack (NYSE:SHAK) five years ago would have delivered you a 97% gain

The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But you can do a lot better than that by buying good quality businesses for attractive prices. For example, the Shake Shack Inc. (NYSE:SHAK) share price is up 97% in the last five years, slightly above the market return. We're also happy to report the stock is up a healthy 97% in the last year.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

We don't think that Shake Shack's modest trailing twelve month profit has the market's full attention at the moment. We think revenue is probably a better guide. Generally speaking, we'd consider a stock like this alongside loss-making companies, simply because the quantum of the profit is so low. For shareholders to have confidence a company will grow profits significantly, it must grow revenue.

In the last 5 years Shake Shack saw its revenue grow at 18% per year. Even measured against other revenue-focussed companies, that's a good result. It's good to see that the stock has 15%, but not entirely surprising given revenue shows strong growth. If you think there could be more growth to come, now might be the time to take a close look at Shake Shack. Opportunity lies where the market hasn't fully priced growth in the underlying business.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Shake Shack shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 97% over the last year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 15% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Shake Shack has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
