Spanish Fines Against Five Low-Cost Carriers Likely to Be Overturned -- Market Talk

1136 GMT - Low-cost airlines Ryanair, Vueling, easyJet, Norwegian Air Shuttle and Volotea are likely to succeed in getting overturned fines imposed on them by the Spanish government, Baader Helvea analysts say in a research note. Spain's Ministry of Social Rights and Consumer Affairs last week imposed a total of 178.9 million euros in fines on the companies for what it said were abusive business practices including charging extra fees for hand luggage or seat reservations, or high fees for printing boarding passes. But the regulation the government is enforcing clashes with EU law and has roots in the 1960s. The law appears outdated and misaligned with the low-cost business model, the analysts add. The European Court of Justice is likely to overturn the fines, they say. A defeat, however, would mean potentially requiring low-cost carriers to overhaul their business model in Spain.
