The hydrogen-compatible combined cycle gas turbine power plant is on track to commence operations in 1H2026.
Keppel has installed an advanced gas turbine at the Keppel Sakra Cogen Plant, Singapore’s first hydrogen-compatible co-generation power plant.
Featuring the latest aerodynamics, cooling design and material technologies, the turbine will enable the 600 megawatt (MW) advanced combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant to be the most energy-efficient plant of its kind in Singapore, says Keppel in a Nov 26 announcement.
The CCGT plant is currently 80% complete and is on track to commence operations in 1H2026.
When completed, the Keppel Sakra Cogen Plant will generate “significantly less” carbon dioxide than that of Singapore’s average operating efficiency for the equivalent power generated using natural gas, abating over 6 million tonnes of CO2 over a “30-year economic useful life”, says Keppel.
The plant will also be able to produce steam for use in industrial processes for energy and chemicals customers on Jurong Island.
An installation ceremony held on Jurong Island today was officiated by guest-of-honour Richard Lim, chairman of the Energy Market Authority (EMA). He was accompanied by Danny Teoh, chairman of Keppel; Loh Chin Hua, CEO of Keppel; Cindy Lim, CEO of Keppel’s infrastructure division; Takuya Murase, president and CEO, gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) business division, energy systems at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries; and Koichi Watanabe, managing director and CEO of Jurong Engineering Limited.
Lim from Keppel’s infrastructure division says the plant will expand Keppel’s generation capacity by nearly 50% to 1900MW.
In another milestone, the plant’s main control building has become the first on Jurong Island to attain the BCA Green Mark Zero Energy Certification from Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority.
