The past three years for IDP Education (ASX:IEL) investors has not been profitable

The truth is that if you invest for long enough, you're going to end up with some losing stocks. But long term IDP Education Limited (ASX:IEL) shareholders have had a particularly rough ride in the last three year. So they might be feeling emotional about the 61% share price collapse, in that time. The more recent news is of little comfort, with the share price down 43% in a year. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 20% in the last three months.

So let's have a look and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the unfortunate three years of share price decline, IDP Education actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 50% per year. This is quite a puzzle, and suggests there might be something temporarily buoying the share price. Or else the company was over-hyped in the past, and so its growth has disappointed.

Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

We note that, in three years, revenue has actually grown at a 21% annual rate, so that doesn't seem to be a reason to sell shares. This analysis is just perfunctory, but it might be worth researching IDP Education more closely, as sometimes stocks fall unfairly. This could present an opportunity.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 23% in the last year, IDP Education shareholders lost 42% (even including dividends). However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 4% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround.
