Academy Sports & Outdoors has recalled two lines of Redfield gun safes over misaligned locking plates that could allow unauthorized users to open them.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday that the recall involves 6,100 of the sporting-goods retailer's Redfield 12-Gun and 18-Gun Fireproof Safes.
The safes' mechanical internal locking plates can fail to align and allow access by unauthorized users, posing a serious injury hazard and risk of death, the agency said.
The 12-Gun Fireproof Safe at issue has the model number 179498. The recalled 18-Gun Fireproof Safe has the model number 179499.
Consumers with those safes can return them to Academy Sports for a free replacement or refund.
No injuries or incidents have been reported as a result of the defect. The safes at issue were sold between February and August of this year.
