An explosion at Eni's fuel-storage facility near Florence, Italy, in the early hours of Monday killed at least two people.

Authorities said the explosion was caused by a fire in a tank of a loading shelter, leaving two people dead, eight injured and four missing. The municipality of Calenzano said the fire was completely extinguished and didn't affect other fuel-storage tanks.

The Rome-based energy group's plant said in a statement on Monday that it would be fully collaborating with judicial authorities to determine the causes of the incident.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni followed the aftermath of the fire closely and expressed her sympathies to the families of the victims, according to Italy's state government office Palazzo Chigi.
