Over the last year, a good number of insiders have significantly increased their holdings in Sunnova Energy International Inc. (NYSE:NOVA). This is encouraging because it indicates that insiders are more optimistic about the company's prospects.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Sunnova Energy International

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Director Akbar Mohamed for US$1.1m worth of shares, at about US$6.92 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of US$4.26. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock if insiders have bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid US$2.1m for 441.02k shares. But insiders sold 185.81k shares worth US$1.5m.
