While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the Viavi Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ:VIAV) share price has gained 22% in the last three months. But that cannot eclipse the less-than-impressive returns over the last three years. After all, the share price is down 40% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.

After losing 7.8% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

Because Viavi Solutions made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

Over the last three years, Viavi Solutions' revenue dropped 10% per year. That's not what investors generally want to see. The stock has disappointed holders over the last three years, falling 12%, annualized. That makes sense given the lack of either profits or revenue growth. Of course, sentiment could become too negative, and the company may actually be making progress to profitability.

A Different Perspective

Viavi Solutions shareholders are up 4.7% for the year. But that was short of the market average. But at least that's still a gain! Over five years the TSR has been a reduction of 6% per year, over five years. It could well be that the business is stabilizing.
