With a median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of close to 0.6x in the Consumer Retailing industry in Australia, you could be forgiven for feeling indifferent about GrainCorp Limited's (ASX:GNC) P/S ratio of 0.2x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Has GrainCorp Performed Recently?

GrainCorp could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the market is expecting its poor revenue performance to improve, keeping the P/S from dropping. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, GrainCorp would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 21% decrease to the company's top line. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 18% in total. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the ten analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 1.5% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 2.9% per year, which paints a poor picture.

With this information, we find it concerning that GrainCorp is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company reject the analyst cohort's pessimism and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining revenues are likely to weigh on the share price eventually.

What Does GrainCorp's P/S Mean For Investors?

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our check of GrainCorp's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue isn't bringing down its P/S as much as we would have predicted. With this in mind, we don't feel the current P/S is justified as declining revenues are unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. If the poor revenue outlook tells us one thing, it's that these current price levels could be unsustainable.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for GrainCorp (1 is a bit unpleasant!) that you need to be mindful of.
