The three-year returns have been stellar for Glaukos (NYSE:GKOS) shareholders despite underlying losses increasing

The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But if you buy shares in a really great company, you can more than double your money. For instance the Glaukos Corporation (NYSE:GKOS) share price is 222% higher than it was three years ago. Most would be happy with that. It's also good to see the share price up 18% over the last quarter.

The past week has proven to be lucrative for Glaukos investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's three-year performance.

Glaukos wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

Glaukos' revenue trended up 6.5% each year over three years. Considering the company is losing money, we think that rate of revenue growth is uninspiring. In comparison, the share price rise of 48% per year over the last three years is pretty impressive. Shareholders should be pretty happy with that, although interested investors might want to examine the financial data more closely to see if the gains are really justified. It seems likely that the market is pretty optimistic about Glaukos, given it is losing money.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Glaukos shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 83% over the last year. That's better than the annualised return of 22% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Glaukos better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - Glaukos has 2 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
