Rogers Communications (RCI) is facing legal action after Canada's Competition Bureau filed an application with the Competition Tribunal alleging that the company falsely advertised Infinite wireless phone plans.
The advertisements create an impression that the plans offer unlimited data but come with data caps that trigger reduction or throttling of data speed by 99%, the bureau said Monday in a statement.
The application seeks to stop Rogers from misleading advertisements, pay a penalty and provide restitution to the plans' customers.
"The advertising of our Infinite plans is clear and truthful, and we will fight this litigation," Rogers said in a statement. "These plans represent the norm in Canada and the bureau's decision to single out Rogers after five years is quite concerning."
