Insiders who bought US$927.9k worth of Tamboran Resources Corporation (ASX:TBN) stock in the last year recovered part of their losses as the stock rose by 12% last week. The purchase, however, has proven to be a pricey bet, with losses currently totalling US$487k.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Independent Non-Executive Director Ryan Dalton bought AU$450k worth of shares at a price of AU$35.97 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being AU$0.14). While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.
Tamboran Resources insiders may have bought shares in the last year, but they didn't sell any. The average buy price was around AU$0.31. I'd consider this a positive as it suggests insiders see value at around the current price. Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Tamboran Resources insiders own about AU$61m worth of shares. That equates to 15% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
