Brazilian officials found 163 Chinese nationals working in "slavery-like conditions" in Bahia state at a construction site associated with Chinese electric vehicle producer BYD's (SHE:002594, HKG:1211) factory, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing the local labor prosecutor's office.
The workers, hired in China by a different firm, were working long hours against the laws and were brought to Brazil irregularly. The workers were occasionally working seven days a week as well, Reuter said.
BYD said it has severed ties with the firm and is collaborating with the authorities. The firm involved in the hirings was not named, Reuters said.
