Even if it's not a huge purchase, we think it was good to see that David Pevcic, the Independent Non-Executive Director of Battery Age Minerals Ltd (ASX:BM8) recently shelled out AU$125k to buy stock, at AU$0.10 per share. While we're hesitant to get too excited about a purchase of that size, we do note it increased their holding by a solid 36%.

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by insider Sufian Ahmad for AU$440k worth of shares, at about AU$0.43 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being AU$0.11). While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.
In the last twelve months Battery Age Minerals insiders were buying shares, but not selling. Their average price was about AU$0.15. This is nice to see since it implies that insiders might see value around current prices. I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Battery Age Minerals insiders own about AU$3.3m worth of shares. That equates to 32% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
The recent insider purchases are heartening. And an analysis of the transactions over the last year also gives us confidence. However, we note that the company didn't make a profit over the last twelve months, which makes us cautious. Insiders likely see value in Battery Age Minerals shares, given these transactions (along with notable insider ownership of the company). So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing. Every company has risks, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Battery Age Minerals (of which 2 are a bit concerning!) you should know about.
