M&T Bank (NYSE:MTB) shareholders notch a 43% return over 1 year, yet earnings have been shrinking

It might be of some concern to shareholders to see the M&T Bank Corporation (NYSE:MTB) share price down 13% in the last month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last year have been pleasing. To wit, it had solidly beat the market, up 38%.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the last year, M&T Bank actually saw its earnings per share drop 22%.

So we don't think that investors are paying too much attention to EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

Unfortunately M&T Bank's fell 9.0% over twelve months. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, M&T Bank's TSR for the last 1 year was 43%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that M&T Bank shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 43% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 6% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand M&T Bank better, we need to consider many other factors.
