Health Care Up as Vaccine Makers Surge -- Health Care Roundup

Dow Jones
01-08

Health-care companies rose as a reported U.S. death from bird flu stoked fears of a new pandemic, boosting shares of vaccine makers.

Moderna rose by more than 12%, while Novavax and CureVac also rallied after U.S. health officials confirmed the first American death caused by the H5N1 bird flu in Louisiana. The latest weekly tally of Covid-19 cases also rose sharply.

Novo Nordisk shares fell after President-elect Donald Trump vowed to "tariff Denmark at a very high level" if the nation refused to hand sovereignty over Greenland to the U.S.

WuXi Biologics agreed to sell an overseas vaccine facility to Merck for $500 million, a move that could strengthen the Chinese drugmaker's cash flow and margins as it navigates global uncertainties.

MAIA Biotechnology's shares rallied after the biotech firm struck a deal with BeiGene to explore development of a telomere-targeting anticancer agent. A telomere is a chromosome feature thought to play a role in cancer and aging, among other things.
