UBS Buybacks Could Be Slowed Down by Regulator's Recommendations -- Market Talk

1406 GMT - UBS's capital return should remain at the lower end of European banks' given the recommendations from the Swiss regulator's December report, Deutsche Bank says in a research note. There is uncertainty around the timing of the new "too big to fail" regulation and future capital requirements for UBS, analysts Benjamin Goy and Sharath Kumar write. However, the base case is the first half of this year, which could lead to pro-forma capital ratios of the parent bank being below future requirements, they say. "While this is only a theoretical risk, and various mitigating actions are possible, it could slow the increase of share buybacks, in our view," they note. (elena.vardon@wsj.com)
