If you want to compound wealth in the stock market, you can do so by buying an index fund. But you can significantly boost your returns by picking above-average stocks. For example, the Planet Fitness, Inc. (NYSE:PLNT) share price is up 37% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 23% (not including dividends). If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! However, the longer term returns haven't been so impressive, with the stock up just 16% in the last three years.

So let's assess the underlying fundamentals over the last 1 year and see if they've moved in lock-step with shareholder returns.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Planet Fitness was able to grow EPS by 15% in the last twelve months. This EPS growth is significantly lower than the 37% increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago. The fairly generous P/E ratio of 52.87 also points to this optimism.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Planet Fitness shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 37% over the last year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 5% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Planet Fitness better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Planet Fitness (at least 2 which don't sit too well with us) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
