Cal-Maine Foods, Inc. (NASDAQ:CALM) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 13th of February to $1.49. This takes the annual payment to 1.9% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

Cal-Maine Foods' Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. However, prior to this announcement, Cal-Maine Foods' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

EPS is set to fall by 53.2% over the next 12 months. If recent patterns in the dividend continue, we could see the payout ratio reaching 80% in the next 12 months, which is on the higher end of the range we would say is sustainable.

Dividend Volatility

Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was $1.18, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $1.89. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 4.8% a year over that time. Modest growth in the dividend is good to see, but we think this is offset by historical cuts to the payments. It is hard to live on a dividend income if the company's earnings are not consistent.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. It's encouraging to see that Cal-Maine Foods has been growing its earnings per share at 53% a year over the past five years. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.

We Really Like Cal-Maine Foods' Dividend

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Cal-Maine Foods is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. The distributions are easily covered by earnings, and there is plenty of cash being generated as well. We should point out that the earnings are expected to fall over the next 12 months, which won't be a problem if this doesn't become a trend, but could cause some turbulence in the next year. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
