The American Petroleum Institute on Tuesday urged Congress to pass legislation enacting its pro-energy agenda and make it more difficult for opponents to change direction.
While President-elect Donald Trump has voiced support for much of what API is seeking and is likely to issue executive orders upon taking office to enact the policies, API President Mike Sommers said it is up to the Republican-controlled Congress to cement the actions into law.
"No opportunity lives forever. History has shown that the pendulum of American politics swings quickly, and we must not waste this moment," Sommers said.
"Durable change happens through Congressional action - especially when it's bipartisan."
During API's annual State of American Energy event, Sommers and other officials reiterated the organization's policy priorities for the Trump administration. These include repealing strict tailpipe emission standards put in place by the Biden administration that are intended to force a transition to electric vehicles, revoking California's ability to set strict emission policies that can then be adopted by other states, repealing the Biden administration's moratorium on new LNG export permits, increasing federal offshore oil and natural gas lease sales and adopting permit reforms to speed energy project development.
While many of the proposals are likely to face pushback and court challenges, Sommers said there is strong public support for pro-petroleum policies.
"As this election made clear, energy was on the ballot - and American energy won," he said. "From coast to coast, voters embraced a future where American energy thrives."
