The Wellard Limited (ASX:WLD) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 150%. The last month tops off a massive increase of 241% in the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, there still wouldn't be many who think Wellard's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.4x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Australia's Food industry is similar at about 1.1x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

For instance, Wellard's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the company to put the disappointing revenue performance behind them over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from falling. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.
Although there are no analyst estimates available for Wellard, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow. The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Wellard's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 9.6% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 20% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 9.3% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.
In light of this, it's somewhat alarming that Wellard's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh on the share price eventually.
Wellard appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
Our look at Wellard revealed its shrinking revenues over the medium-term haven't impacted the P/S as much as we anticipated, given the industry is set to grow. When we see revenue heading backwards in the context of growing industry forecasts, it'd make sense to expect a possible share price decline on the horizon, sending the moderate P/S lower. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
