BUZZ-Major U.S. card issuers fall as Trump's tariffs spook markets

** Shares of U.S. card cos fall in premarket trading as part of a market-wide selloff sparked by President Trump's sweeping tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China

** Mastercard MA.N and Visa V.N fall nearly 1% each, while American Express AXP.N falls 1.6%

** The risk-off sentiment, stemming from fears of reignited inflation and trade tensions, dampens optimism from card firms' better-than-expected results in recent weeks

** Trump ordered tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China and demanded they prevent the inflow of fentanyl into the U.S.

** He also said Mexico and Canada must stop illegal immigrants from entering the country

** Mexico and Canada immediately vowed retaliatory tariffs, while China said it would challenge Trump's move at the World Trade Organization and take other "countermeasures"

** AXP rose over 58.4% in 2024, while V and MA ended the year up nearly 21.4% and 23.5%, respectively
