Some Valley National Bancorp (NASDAQ:VLY) shareholders may be a little concerned to see that the Senior Executive Vice President of Commercial Banking, Joseph Chillura, recently sold a substantial US$1.0m worth of stock at a price of US$10.31 per share. That sale reduced their total holding by 19% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.

In fact, the recent sale by Joseph Chillura was the biggest sale of Valley National Bancorp shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$10.28. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).
Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 852.00 shares worth US$6.1k. On the other hand they divested 201.17k shares, for US$1.8m. Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Valley National Bancorp insiders own 1.3% of the company, worth about US$76m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
The insider sales have outweighed the insider buying, at Valley National Bancorp, in the last three months. And our longer term analysis of insider transactions didn't bring confidence, either. Insiders own shares, but we're still pretty cautious, given the history of sales. We're in no rush to buy! Of course, the future is what matters most.
