Star Bulk Carriers (NASDAQ:SBLK) shareholders have earned a 26% CAGR over the last five years

Star Bulk Carriers Corp. (NASDAQ:SBLK) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 23% in the last quarter. On the bright side the share price is up over the last half decade. Unfortunately its return of 87% is below the market return of 92%. While the long term returns are impressive, we do have some sympathy for those who bought more recently, given the 31% drop, in the last year.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the five years of share price growth, Star Bulk Carriers moved from a loss to profitability. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd hope to see the share price to rise.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Star Bulk Carriers' TSR for the last 5 years was 224%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Investors in Star Bulk Carriers had a tough year, with a total loss of 23% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 24%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 26%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Star Bulk Carriers better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
