Intuit Insiders Sell US$19m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution

The fact that multiple Intuit Inc. (NASDAQ:INTU) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Intuit Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive VP and Chief People & Places Officer, Laura Fennell, for US$5.1m worth of shares, at about US$659 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$592). So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

In the last year Intuit insiders didn't buy any company stock. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Intuit Insiders Are Selling The Stock

Insider Ownership Of Intuit

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that Intuit insiders own 2.4% of the company, worth about US$4.0b. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
