We think all investors should try to buy and hold high quality multi-year winners. And we've seen some truly amazing gains over the years. For example, the Cameco Corporation (TSE:CCO) share price is up a whopping 488% in the last half decade, a handsome return for long term holders. If that doesn't get you thinking about long term investing, we don't know what will. Better yet, the share price has risen 4.3% in the last week.
After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

While Cameco made a small profit, in the last year, we think that the market is probably more focussed on the top line growth at the moment. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. For shareholders to have confidence a company will grow profits significantly, it must grow revenue.
In the last 5 years Cameco saw its revenue grow at 8.1% per year. That's a pretty good long term growth rate. Arguably it's more than reflected in the very strong share price gain of 43% a year over a half a decade. It might not be cheap but a (long-term) growth stock like this is usually well worth taking a closer look at.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. So we recommend checking out this free report showing consensus forecasts
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Cameco, it has a TSR of 498% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
Cameco's TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 23%. It has to be noted that the recent return falls short of the 43% shareholders have gained each year, over half a decade. More recently, the share price growth has slowed. But it has to be said the overall picture is one of good long term and short term performance. Arguably that makes Cameco a stock worth watching. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Cameco better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - Cameco has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
