If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. Although, when we looked at Element Solutions (NYSE:ESI), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Element Solutions:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.071 = US$336m ÷ (US$5.1b - US$384m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
Thus, Element Solutions has an ROCE of 7.1%. On its own, that's a low figure but it's around the 8.4% average generated by the Chemicals industry.

Things have been pretty stable at Element Solutions, with its capital employed and returns on that capital staying somewhat the same for the last five years. Businesses with these traits tend to be mature and steady operations because they're past the growth phase. With that in mind, unless investment picks up again in the future, we wouldn't expect Element Solutions to be a multi-bagger going forward.
In a nutshell, Element Solutions has been trudging along with the same returns from the same amount of capital over the last five years. Yet to long term shareholders the stock has gifted them an incredible 130% return in the last five years, so the market appears to be rosy about its future. Ultimately, if the underlying trends persist, we wouldn't hold our breath on it being a multi-bagger going forward.
On a final note, we've found 1 warning sign for Element Solutions that we think you should be aware of.
