Spotify reportedly poised to launch a higher-priced tier for subscribers

  • Spotify is reportedly planning to launch a high-fidelity streaming option. The new tier would cost an extra $6 per month, but there’s no timeline for its launch yet.

Spotify subscriptions are about to become more complicated for indecisive members.

A report from Bloomberg indicates a new hi-fi streaming option is in the works, which would give listeners a premium sound experience to pay $6 more per month. The new tier is currently being referred to as Music Pro.

The new subscription plan has been in the works since 2021. It reportedly will include high-quality audio streaming as well as remixing capabilities, using artificial intelligence. Members could also get access to exclusive ticket offers.

The $6 fee would be in addition to the current $12 per month Spotify Premium plan. There is, however, no firm timeline for the plan's release, and it’s not certain if the plan will become available this year.

A Spotify representative told Fortune the company "cannot comment on or confirm any of the speculation about a potential future offering."

Lossless audio plans are the end game for audiophiles, who have grumbled for years about the quality of streaming music. Average consumers, however, have been happy with the audio performance of services like Spotify and Apple Music.

While earbuds and speakers have improved, most listeners are likely to have a hard time distinguishing between the two formats.

The new tier, assuming it launches, would follow a price increase from Spotify last year. The service raised the cost of each of its plans for $1 or $2 per month. That followed another price increase in July of 2023. The company also introduced Spotify Audiobooks Access for $10 per month.
