Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Higher Pre-Bell Monday as Investors Focus on Inflation Data

The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was up 0.5% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) advanced 0.4% in Monday's premarket activity as investors focus on upcoming inflation data.

US stock futures were also higher, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.5%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advancing 0.7%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.4% before the start of regular trading.

The Chicago Fed National Activity Index for January posts at 8:30 am ET, followed by the Dallas Fed Manufacturing Survey for February at 10:30 am ET.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was flat and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 1.2% higher.

Power Play:

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) advanced 0.5%, and the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was 0.9% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was down 0.04%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) gained 1.8%, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose by 0.6%.

Fiscalnote (NOTE) shares were up more than 6% in recent Monday premarket activity after the company said it has agreed to sell its Dragonfly Intelligence and Oxford Analytica units to Dow Jones for $40 million.

Winners and Losers:

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) was up 0.2%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was down 0.4%. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) gained 0.5%. The VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) was 1% higher.

Domino's Pizza (DPZ) shares were down 3.6% pre-bell after the company reported lower-than-expected fiscal Q4 earnings and revenue.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) was down 0.9%, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) was up by 0.5%.

Kosmos Energy (KOS) stock was up 3.5% before Monday's opening bell after falling 5.1% on Friday. The company reported that it swung to a Q4 adjusted net loss amid lower revenue.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) advanced 0.6%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund (VHT) was up 0.04% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF (IYH) and the iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) were inactive.

Summit Therapeutics (SMMT) stock was up 3% premarket following a 4.8% decline at the close of Friday's session. The company said Monday it will collaborate with Pfizer (PFE) on a set of clinical trials to evaluate ivonescimab, its investigational drug, in combination with several Pfizer antibody drug conjugates to treat multiple solid tumors. Summit also reported a wider Q4 non-GAAP net loss that trailed analyst estimates.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) advanced 0.7%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was up 2.1%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was 2% lower.

Equitable Holdings (EQH) shares were up 1.9% pre-bell Monday after the company said it launched a cash tender offer to purchase up to 46 million AllianceBernstein Holding (AB) units for $38.50 per unit, totaling about $1.8 billion. AllianceBernstein stock was up 2.9% before the bell.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI) advanced 0.4% while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) fell 0.1% and the iShares US Industrials ETF (IYJ) was inactive.

RTX (RTX) stock was up 1% before the opening bell after the company said it won an additional "multi-million-dollar" contract from the NATO Support Procurement Support Agency to deliver ELCAN Specter DR dual role sights for the Danish armed forces.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil retreated 0.04% to $70.37 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas fell 6.6% to $3.96 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund (USO) gained 0.2% while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was 5.8% lower.

Gold futures for April advanced 0.3% to $2,962.30 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures retreated 0.4% to $33.20 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) were up 0.4%, and the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was 0.2% higher.
