Insiders who purchased AU$2.51m worth of MetalsTech Limited (ASX:MTC) shares over the past year recouped some of their losses after price gained 22% last week. However, the purchase is proving to be an expensive wager as insiders are yet to get ahead of their losses which currently stand at AU$738k since the time of purchase.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

MetalsTech Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The insider Kenneth Hall made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for AU$2.5m worth of shares at a price of AU$0.22 each. That means that even when the share price was higher than AU$0.14 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when an insider has purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price. Kenneth Hall was the only individual insider to buy shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that MetalsTech insiders own 37% of the company, worth about AU$10m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
