Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is pulling its Advanced Data Protection (ADP) feature in the U.K. after the government pushed for a secret back door' to access user data.
The company confirmed the move in a statement, saying that new users in the U.K. can no longer enable ADP, and existing users will eventually have to disable it to keep their iCloud accounts active. ADP provides end-to-end encryption for iCloud backups, photos, notes, and other data, ensuring that only usersnot Applecan decrypt their information.
"We are gravely disappointed that ADP won't be available in the UK, especially given the rise in data breaches and privacy threats," Apple said. The company emphasized that it has never built a backdoor for any of its products and never will.
Users trying to access ADP in the U.K. will see a message stating that Apple can no longer offer the feature. Apple said it will provide further guidance to affected users soon.
