TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister, Sugiono, delivered a national statement at the High-Level Segment Meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) 58th Session in Geneva, Switzerland, on February 24, 2025. Sugiono affirmed Indonesia's commitment under Prabowo’s reign to help advance and protect global human rights. 

"Indonesia is steadfast in bolstering its mandate to create a world order based on freedom, eternal peace, and social justice," the Indonesian Foreign Minister said in his statement.

Amid the current global dynamics characterized by the development gap, growing sense of Islamphobia and discrimination, as well as the Palestinian issue, Indonesia pledged to advance the human rights agenda at the global level.

"Every country should place human rights at the heart of its national policies," stated Sugiono.

Prabowo’s administration, he said, has adopted a number of priority policies to fulfill human rights in Indonesia, including the Free Nutritious Meals program, public housing development, and free health check-up services for the public.

Sugiono also reminded the UNHRC to return to its mandate, which is to safeguard human rights, and not to be a political tool in inter-country relations. Human rights cooperation must be based on sincere commitment and equal partnership. No country has the moral authority to judge another.

Furthermore, regarding Palestine, the Foreign Minister emphasized that Indonesia will not remain silent in the face of Israel's occupation of Palestine. Therefore, Indonesia calls, especially to those who claim to uphold human rights, to immediately stop the genocide and war in Palestine and the double standards applied in human rights enforcement.

Indonesia is committed to upholding the principles of justice, equality, and concrete solutions.

The High-Level Segment (HLS) is held in the first week of the first session of the UNHRC each year. HLS is attended by more than 128 high-ranking officials at the level of Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and others.

Indonesia is currently a member of the UNHRC for the sixth time, for the period 2024-2026. Indonesia actively raises a number of crucial issues in the forum, including Palestine, the Rohingya Muslims, intolerance and religious-based hatred, the right to development, and capacity building in the field of human rights.
