Goosehead Insurance's (NASDAQ:GSHD) earnings growth rate lags the 14% CAGR delivered to shareholders

It hasn't been the best quarter for Goosehead Insurance, Inc (NASDAQ:GSHD) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 19% in that time. But at least the stock is up over the last five years. Unfortunately its return of 80% is below the market return of 107%.

While the stock has fallen 8.3% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Over half a decade, Goosehead Insurance managed to grow its earnings per share at 21% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 12% average annual increase in the share price. So it seems the market isn't so enthusiastic about the stock these days. Of course, with a P/E ratio of 134.28, the market remains optimistic.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. Dive deeper into the earnings by checking this interactive graph of Goosehead Insurance's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We've already covered Goosehead Insurance's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for Goosehead Insurance shareholders, and that cash payout contributed to why its TSR of 95%, over the last 5 years, is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Goosehead Insurance shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 49% over one year. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 14%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
