WESCO International, Inc. (NYSE:WCC) has announced that it will be increasing its periodic dividend on the 31st of March to $0.4538, which will be 10% higher than last year's comparable payment amount of $0.413. Although the dividend is now higher, the yield is only 0.9%, which is below the industry average.

WESCO International's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. However, prior to this announcement, WESCO International's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 41.2%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 9.7% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

WESCO International Doesn't Have A Long Payment History

Looking back, the dividend has been stable, but the company hasn't been paying a dividend for very long so we can't be confident that the dividend will remain stable through all economic environments. Since 2023, the annual payment back then was $1.50, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $1.65. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 4.9% a year over that time. We like that the dividend hasn't been shrinking. However we're conscious that the company hasn't got an overly long track record of dividend payments yet, which makes us wary of relying on its dividend income.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. It's encouraging to see that WESCO International has been growing its earnings per share at 21% a year over the past five years. Rapid earnings growth and a low payout ratio suggest this company has been effectively reinvesting in its business. Should that continue, this company could have a bright future.

We Really Like WESCO International's Dividend

Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
