Spire Global (SPIR) said Monday it was able to establish a two-way optical link between two Low Earth Orbit satellites.
The satellites, launched in June 2023, carry optical inter-satellite link payloads that transmit data, with potential applications in weather forecasting, global communications, and remote sensing, the company said.
Support for developing the OISL technology came from a European Space Agency project, with funding from the UK Space Agency, according to the company.
Spire said it plans to launch three more Low Earth Multi-Use Receiver satellites with OISL technology in 2025, with two satellites planned to fly with Exolaunch on SpaceX's Transporter-13 rideshare mission.
The company will also launch four additional LEMUR satellites in March at the earliest to maintain its constellation and support Space Services missions, Spire said.
