Global Industrial (NYSE:GIC) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year

Global Industrial Company (NYSE:GIC) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 17th of March to $0.26. This will take the annual payment to 4.4% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Global Industrial's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Global Industrial was earning enough to cover the previous dividend, but it was paying out quite a large proportion of its free cash flows. The business is earning enough to make the dividend feasible, but the cash payout ratio of 85% indicates it is more focused on returning cash to shareholders than growing the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 14.9% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 65%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Global Industrial Is Still Building Its Track Record

Global Industrial's dividend has been pretty stable for a little while now, but we will continue to be cautious until it has been demonstrated for a few more years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of $0.20 in 2016 to the most recent total annual payment of $1.04. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 20% over that duration. Global Industrial has been growing its dividend quite rapidly, which is exciting. However, the short payment history makes us question whether this performance will persist across a full market cycle.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Earnings have grown at around 3.5% a year for the past five years, which isn't massive but still better than seeing them shrink. The company has been growing at a pretty soft 3.5% per annum, and is paying out quite a lot of its earnings to shareholders. This could mean the dividend doesn't have the growth potential we look for going into the future.

In Summary

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, but generally we are not too happy with the payments Global Industrial has been making. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
