Australia's major telecommunications firms took steps to ensure residents in Queensland and northern New South Wales have access to connectivity in anticipation of cyclone Alfred's landfall, The Australian reported Friday.
Telstra Group (ASX:TLS), TPG Telecom (ASX:TPG), and Optus sandbagged towers to combat major flooding and severe winds and installed backup batteries and diesel generators.
Optus confirmed that 45 of its mobile sites have lost connection from blackouts.
Over 84,000 homes and businesses lost electricity, which could last for up to a week.
