To the annoyance of some shareholders, China Ecotourism Group Limited (HKG:1371) shares are down a considerable 29% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 54% share price decline.
Following the heavy fall in price, China Ecotourism Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the Hospitality industry in Hong Kong, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 0.7x and even P/S above 3x are quite common. Perhaps the market is expecting this acceptable revenue performance to take a dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
China Ecotourism Group's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
It's no surprise that China Ecotourism Group maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term.
